Quick Verdict
When the Ring tempts you, you get an emblem called The Ring (if you don't have one), it gains its next ability, and you choose a creature you control as your Ring-bearer. There are four abilities, gained in order and never lost: the Ring-bearer becomes legendary and hard to block, loots when it attacks, makes blockers sacrifice themselves, and drains 3 life when it connects. It can tempt you even if you control no creature.
The Ring tempts you is a keyword action from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (June 2023). Each time it happens, you get an emblem called The Ring, it gains a new ability, and you pick one of your creatures as your Ring-bearer. Four tempts later, your Ring-bearer is a legendary menace nobody can block well and everybody has to fear.
If you've been reading card text that says "the Ring tempts you" without a clear idea of what it does, this guide covers the rules, all four levels, and the cards worth building around.
The Ring Tempts You: Rules in MTG
The official wording is short:
As the Ring tempts you, you get an emblem named The Ring if you don't have one. Then your emblem gains its next ability and you choose a creature you control to become or remain your Ring-bearer.
Three things follow from that:
- The Ring is an emblem. It lives in the command zone, can't be removed, and each player has at most one.
- It gains abilities in order, top to bottom, and keeps every one for the rest of the game.
- You must choose a Ring-bearer each time, if you control a creature. You can re-pick the same one.
The Ring can tempt you even if you control no creature. In that case you still get the emblem and the next ability, and abilities that trigger "whenever the Ring tempts you" still go off. You just don't get a Ring-bearer, so abilities that care about choosing one, such as the card-draw on Call of the Ring, don't trigger.
The Four Levels of the Ring
Each temptation unlocks one more ability. They stack.
| Times tempted | What the Ring gives your Ring-bearer | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Legendary, and can't be blocked by creatures with greater power | Large blockers can't stop a small Ring-bearer |
| 2 | Whenever it attacks, draw a card, then discard a card | A free loot every attack |
| 3 | Whenever it becomes blocked by a creature, that creature's controller sacrifices it at end of combat | Blocking it costs your opponent the blocker |
| 4 | Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, each opponent loses 3 life | Every hit drains the whole table |
After the fourth temptation the Ring has nothing new to gain, but the Ring still tempts you: you keep choosing a Ring-bearer, and every "whenever the Ring tempts you" trigger still fires. That is why later tempts are still valuable on cards such as Nazgûl.
The Ring-bearer does not have to be your best creature
Level one protects small creatures: nothing with more power than the Ring-bearer can block it. A 1/1 or 2/2 Ring-bearer is therefore harder to stop than a 6/6, and you can switch to a bigger one once the later abilities matter.
Why the Ring Is Stronger Than It Reads
Each level fixes a different problem.
Level one fixes blocking. The best defence against a small creature is a bigger blocker, and the Ring takes that option away. Only creatures with power equal to or lower than the Ring-bearer can block it.
Level two fixes card quality. A loot on every attack converts spare lands into answers and is a steady source of selection in a long game.
Level three fixes blockers. Even a creature that can legally block pays for it. Opponents can chump the Ring-bearer, but each chump costs them the creature at the end of combat.
Level four fixes life totals. In Commander, three life from each opponent per hit is a real clock: hit twice and a full table has lost 6 life without a single point of combat damage landing on them.
The effect is a creature that gets harder to answer with blockers each time it's tempted, and the answer has to be removal.
Rules Questions People Get Wrong
The Ring-bearer is not a permanent change. It's a designation. If your Ring-bearer dies, you choose another creature the next time the Ring tempts you; the emblem and its abilities stay.
The legendary part has teeth. The Ring makes your Ring-bearer legendary, so the legend rule applies. If you control a second creature with the same name and both are legendary, you keep one.
Targets matter. Some cards that tempt you require targets. If each of those targets becomes illegal before the spell or ability resolves, it doesn't resolve, and the Ring does not tempt you.
A card is not a temptation just because the Ring is around. Only cards and abilities that say "the Ring tempts you" cause it. Nothing about a creature attacking or blocking will do it on its own.
The Best "The Ring Tempts You" Cards
Call of the Ring ({1}{B}). At the beginning of your upkeep, the Ring tempts you. Whenever you choose a creature as your Ring-bearer, you may pay 2 life to draw a card. Every upkeep adds a level and draws a card, so you reach the fourth ability within four upkeeps of casting it.
Nazgûl ({2}{B}). Deathtouch, tempts you when it enters, and whenever the Ring tempts you it puts a +1/+1 counter on each Wraith you control. A deck can have up to nine copies, and each one tempts you.
Sauron, the Dark Lord ({3}{U}{B}{R}). Whenever an Army you control deals combat damage to a player, the Ring tempts you, and whenever it tempts you, you may discard your hand and draw four cards.
Witch-king of Angmar ({3}{B}{B}). Flying, with a punishing trigger when you're hit: opponents sacrifice a creature that dealt damage to you, and the Ring tempts you.
One Ring to Rule Them All ({2}{B}{B}). A Saga that tempts you on chapter one, destroys all nonlegendary creatures on chapter two, and drains opponents for each creature card in their graveyard on chapter three. Your Ring-bearer is legendary, so it survives.
Claim the Precious ({1}{B}{B}). Destroy target creature, and the Ring tempts you. Removal that doubles as a level.
Inherited Envelope ({3}). A mana rock that tempts you when it enters, so it fixes colours while it progresses the Ring.
Birthday Escape ({U}). Draw a card, and the Ring tempts you, for one blue mana. The cheapest way to add a level in any blue deck.
Boromir, Warden of the Tower, Fiery Inscription, Ringsight, War of the Last Alliance and In the Darkness Bind Them all tempt you too, across several colours. More than fifty cards do in total.
The Ring in Commander
Commander is where the Ring belongs. Games are long enough to reach level four, the legendary Ring-bearer fits a format already full of legendary creatures, and drain effects scale across a four-person table.
The Lord of the Rings Commander decks (Tales of Middle-earth Commander) are built around it. If you are choosing a deck, our Lord of the Rings Magic: The Gathering guide covers the set, its precons and its most valuable cards, and our guide to Universes Beyond explains how the crossover sets fit into the game's formats.
If you also play with the monarch or initiative, remember that those are designations that move when a creature deals combat damage. A Ring-bearer that is hard to block is well suited to connecting with the player who holds either.
Common Misconceptions
"I need a creature to be tempted." You don't. The Ring tempts you anyway.
"The Ring-bearer loses abilities when it dies." The emblem keeps them. The next Ring-bearer you choose gets them all.
"The Ring-bearer can't be blocked." Only by creatures with greater power, at level one. Smaller creatures and equal-power creatures can block it.
"I can have several Ring-bearers." One at a time.
"The fourth tempt is the last." The Ring tempts you as many times as the cards say. After the fourth, you still choose a Ring-bearer and the triggers still fire.
