In October 2026, the cheapest boxes were three recent Mega Evolution sets, Perfect Order, Pitch Black and Chaos Rising, all under $185, plus Journey Together from 2025. Those are close to MSRP.

The sets with a famous chase card cost much more, even while they're still in print. Phantasmal Flames, with its Mega Charizard X ex, and Destined Rivals were both around $390 to $400 a box.

How Many Packs Are in a Pokémon Booster Box?

36. That has been the standard for English booster boxes since the original Base Set. The other sealed products are built around fewer packs:

Pokémon Booster Box MSRP

A booster box has no price printed on it. The figure retailers usually quote is $161.64: 36 packs at the US pack MSRP of $4.49.

In practice you'll rarely pay that. On TCGplayer in October 2026, the cheapest boxes sold for about $10 to $30 above it, and the boxes of popular sets sold for more than double.

Box, Bundle or Elite Trainer Box: Which Is Cheapest per Pack?

Usually the booster box. These are TCGplayer prices per pack in October 2026:

SetBooster boxBooster BundleElite Trainer BoxSingle pack
Perfect Order$4.77$6.35$7.99$5.95
Journey Together$5.28$6.69$15.02$6.39
Surging Sparks$8.36$10.02$13.64$8.73
Mega Evolution$8.44$11.21$13.28$8.84
Phantasmal Flames$10.91$14.10$16.56$11.99
Destined Rivals$11.21$10.52$12.70$8.45
Evolving Skies$63.50—$53.46$43.92

Two cases break the rule:

  • Destined Rivals. In October 2026 the box worked out at $11.21 a pack, more than a loose pack ($8.45) or a pack from the Booster Bundle ($10.52).
  • Evolving Skies. Once a set is out of print, a sealed box is worth more as a sealed box than as 36 packs. If you just want to open packs, buy loose ones.

An Elite Trainer Box is almost always the most expensive way to buy packs. What you're paying for is the sleeves, dice and storage box that come with it.

Which Sets Have No Booster Box?

Special sets, the smaller sets released between the main ones, aren't sold in English booster boxes. Their packs come in Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Bundles, tins and collections instead. That includes:

If you see a "booster box" for one of these sets, it is either a Japanese product, which holds different packs, or a box someone has filled with packs themselves. Check exactly what's inside before you buy.

Is a Pokémon Booster Box Worth It?

For opening, a box is the cheapest way to get a lot of packs at once, especially for a set that sells near MSRP. Opening packs rarely gets back the box's price in card value, though. If you want one particular card, buying that card is almost always cheaper. Our set pages list each set's most valuable cards, so you can see what you'd be chasing.

For keeping sealed, look at the table before you assume prices only go up. Evolving Skies, a 2021 set, was about $2,290 in October 2026. But Battle Styles, released the same year, was about $284, and Vivid Voltage from 2020 was about $315. That's a modest return for five years of storage. The boxes that took off had chase cards that collectors kept chasing, which nobody can promise for a new set.

Watch for resealed boxes. Some sellers open a box, take the packs most likely to hold a hit, and rewrap it. Buy expensive boxes from established retailers or sellers with a clear return policy, and be wary of a price well below the table above.

How this list is built

Every week we pull TCGplayer market prices for every English Pokémon set through tcgcsv.com, a public mirror of TCGplayer's data, and keep each set's standard booster box. Half boxes, Enhanced boxes, cases and code cards are left out, as are boxes with no recent market price. Cost per pack is the box price divided by 36. The box, bundle and Elite Trainer Box comparison uses the same data from 11 October 2026.

Which Pokémon Booster Box Should You Buy?

If you want to open packs, a box of a current set near MSRP is the cheapest way to do it. In October 2026 that meant Perfect Order, Pitch Black, Chaos Rising or Journey Together. If you're after one card, buy the single. If you're buying to hold, treat it as a bet on that set's chase cards, not a sure thing.

For the cards that drive these prices, see our most expensive Pokémon cards list and our Charizard card guide, both updated every week.
