Quick Verdict

The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator, which Logan Paul sold for $16,492,000 at Goldin Auctions on 16 February 2026, a Guinness World Record. Among cards you can actually buy today, the most valuable ungraded English card on TCGplayer in October 2026 was the RGB Rare Mew from 30th Celebration, at about $6,000. Most of the rest of the top 50 are vintage: secret rares from the e-Card era, Gold Star cards and Neo-era Shining Pokémon.

Two Different Questions

The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator, which Logan Paul sold for $16,492,000 at Goldin Auctions on 16 February 2026. That is a Guinness World Record, and nothing else comes close.

But "most expensive Pokémon card" usually means one of two things: the record sales, set by a handful of graded cards at auction, or the cards that are worth the most today if you want to buy one. This guide answers both. The second half is a live table of the 50 most valuable cards on TCGplayer, rebuilt from market data every week.

The Most Expensive Pokémon Card Ever Sold: Pikachu Illustrator

The Pikachu Illustrator was never sold in a pack. It was awarded as a prize in a 1998 illustration contest, and its art is by Atsuko Nishida, the original designer of Pikachu. The copy at the top of the market is the only one known to be graded PSA Gem Mint 10.

Its sale history:

DateSalePrice
2021Bought by Logan Paul in a private sale$5,275,000
16 February 2026Sold by Logan Paul at Goldin Auctions$16,492,000

Guinness World Records lists the 2026 sale as the most expensive Pokémon trading card sold at auction. The price more than tripled in five years.

The Most Expensive Charizard Sales

Charizard is the card most people mean when they ask about valuable Pokémon cards, and the 1st Edition Base Set Charizard is the benchmark.

  • A 1st Edition Charizard graded PSA 10 sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions on 12 December 2025, according to published reports. That beat the previous record for the card, $420,000, set in 2022.

Those are graded prices for the best-condition copies. Ungraded vintage Charizards trade far lower. The most valuable ungraded Charizard on TCGplayer in October 2026 was the Skyridge Secret Rare (about $3,000), followed by the Base Set Shadowless Charizard (about $2,260).

What the Top 50 Have in Common

Reading the table as a whole, a few patterns explain most of it:

  • Vintage secret rares. The e-Card era sets, Aquapolis and Skyridge, put Secret Rares like Lugia and Charizard near the top of the list.
  • Gold Star cards. The EX-era "Star" Pokémon (Jolteon Star, Raikou Star, Latios Star and others) appear several times.
  • Shining Pokémon from Neo Destiny. Shining Celebi, Shining Charizard and Shining Kabutops all make the list.
  • Alternate arts. From the modern era, the cards that hold value are full-art illustrations: the alternate-art VMAX cards from Evolving Skies and the Tag Team GX alternate arts from Team Up.
  • Few modern cards. In October 2026, only nine of the top 50 came from Sword & Shield or later. The newest are the 30th Celebration Mew cards at the very top; the rest are alternate-art VMAX cards, the Prismatic Evolutions Umbreon ex, a Charizard VMAX, and two promos, including the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat.

Most Expensive vs Rarest

The most expensive card and the rarest card are not always the same thing. Price needs a buyer as well as a short supply.

The rarest Pokémon cards tend to be prizes, trophies and staff promos that never went into packs. Many of them change hands privately or almost never sell, so they don't appear in market data at all. The Pikachu Illustrator is the rare exception that does both: very few copies exist, and it is the most expensive card ever sold.

Graded vs Ungraded

Every record sale on this page is a graded card, and most of them are PSA 10s, the top grade. Our table uses ungraded market prices, because that is what most cards on TCGplayer sell as.

The gap between the two can be huge for vintage cards. A 1st Edition Charizard graded PSA 10 sold for $550,000; ungraded copies sell for a fraction of that, and the price depends heavily on condition. If you're buying a card worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, a graded copy from a reputable grader removes most of the doubt about condition and authenticity.

How this list is built

Every week we pull TCGplayer market prices for every English Pokémon set through tcgcsv.com, a public mirror of TCGplayer's data, and rank all priced cards by their most valuable printing. Jumbo cards, code cards and sealed products are excluded. Cards with no recent market price are not included, which is why some very rare cards are missing. Record sales come from Guinness World Records and published auction reports.

Conclusion: Records and Real Prices

The record belongs to the Pikachu Illustrator at $16.49 million, and it will likely stay there for a long time. For the cards you can actually buy, the market is dominated by vintage rarities from the early 2000s, with a short list of modern alternate arts and the Eevee and Charizard cards that collectors keep coming back to.

If you're looking at a specific modern set, our set pages compare what each product costs per pack and list each set's most valuable cards: Prismatic Evolutions, Evolving Skies, 151 and Ascended Heroes.
