Quick Verdict
The best Commander precon to buy in October 2026 is Multiverse Reforged from Reality Fracture: about $51 on TCGplayer, with cards worth about $99 and one of the best win rates of any unmodified precon. For the most value per dollar, Prismari Artistry from Secrets of Strixhaven costs about $42 and holds about $87 of cards. For a first deck, the $29.99 Foundations Commander decks are built for new players, and Keen Engineering still sells at that price. How to read it:
- Price is the TCGplayer market price of the sealed deck this week.
- Cards worth adds up the market price of all 100 cards in the deck, using the exact printings inside. A foil card counts at its foil price.
- Value is cards worth divided by price. 2.0× means the cards sell for twice what the deck costs. Green marks decks at 1.5× or better, red marks decks that cost more than their cards.
What the Value Number Does and Doesn't Mean
The value number is a fair way to compare decks, but it's not money in your pocket.
- About a quarter of the value is bulk. In the median deck, cards under $1 make up about 28% of the total. Nobody buys a $0.20 common on its own. Counting only cards worth $1 or more, 34 of the 80 decks are still worth more than their price, and the median deck holds about 94% of its price in those cards.
- Selling costs money. TCGplayer's market price is what buyers pay. After fees and shipping, a seller keeps noticeably less.
- New precons start high and settle. Prices in the first weeks after release move fast in both directions. The Foundations and Reality Fracture decks were two weeks old when this was written.
So read the number as "how much of a deck's price is backed by its cards", not as a profit. A deck at 2.0× is a safe buy even if you end up not playing it. A deck under 1.0× is priced as a collector item.
The Best Commander Precons to Buy in October 2026
These picks are all in print, or recently out of print and still easy to find. Prices are TCGplayer market prices on 18 October 2026.
Best overall: Multiverse Reforged (Reality Fracture)
About $51, cards worth about $99. Jace, Multiverse Architect leads a four-colour deck (white, blue, black and red) built around tokens and polymorph effects, with 16 new cards. Its best reprints include Avacyn, Angel of Horror and Flawless Maneuver.
Draftsim called it "one of the best precons of the year" if you can buy it near its roughly $50 MSRP, which it still sells at. On Playgroup.gg, which tracks games between unmodified precons, it had the fifth-best win rate of 84 decks in October 2026.
Best value: Prismari Artistry (Secrets of Strixhaven)
About $42, cards worth about $87. The best value ratio of any precon in the table. Rootha, Mastering the Moment leads a blue-red deck of big instants and sorceries, with Faerie Mastermind and Goldspan Dragon as its most valuable cards. Draftsim rated it the most competitive of the five Strixhaven decks.
The other Strixhaven decks are good value too: Quandrix Unlimited (about $38 for $76 of cards) and Lorehold Spirit (about $43 for $77). Witherbloom Pestilence is the one to skip: at about $63 for $75 of cards, it's the weakest value of the five, and Draftsim found it the weakest deck.
Best for beginners: Foundations Commander decks
The five Foundations Commander decks (October 2026) are a new line made for players who've never built a Commander deck. Each is one colour, has a $29.99 MSRP, and comes with a foil borderless commander, tokens and a deck box.
| Deck | Commander | Colour | Theme | Price | Cards worth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keen Engineering | Sai, Master Thopterist | Blue | Artifacts | ~$30 | ~$50 |
| Wretched Ranks | Ghoulcaller Gisa | Black | Zombies | ~$40 | ~$55 |
| Reign of Dragons | Lathliss, Dragon Queen | Red | Dragons | ~$49 | ~$63 |
| Calling All Angels | Giada, Font of Hope | White | Angels, lifegain | ~$51 | ~$54 |
| Tramplesaurus Rex | Ghalta, Primal Hunger | Green | Big creatures, ramp | ~$59 | ~$67 |
Only Keen Engineering sells near the $29.99 MSRP on TCGplayer. Above $45, these decks lose their point: one colour and simple cards are great for learning, but a regular precon at the same price is stronger and holds more value. If a local store sells them at MSRP, buy there.
Best cheap deck: Living Energy (Aetherdrift)
About $26, cards worth about $55. The cheapest precon in the table and one of the best value ratios. Saheeli, Radiant Creator leads a blue-red-green artifact and energy deck, with Panharmonicon and Academy Ruins inside.
Best Universes Beyond deal: the Marvel Super Heroes decks
The four Marvel decks list at about $75 each, and reviewers called that too much. On TCGplayer they now sell far below it:
- Wakanda Forever (T'Challa) and The Fantastic Four: about $36 each, with about $62 of cards. Draftsim rated The Fantastic Four the most competitive of the four and Wakanda Forever the most fun.
- Doom Prevails (Doctor Doom): about $61, with the most valuable cards of the four, about $87.
- Avengers Assemble (Captain America): about $47, and the one Draftsim called beginner-friendly.
Turtle Power!, the single TMNT deck (March 2026), is about $55 for about $75 of cards. It's five colours, with an unusually good mana base for a precon, but it's complex for a first deck.
Strongest out of the box: Tarkir: Dragonstorm
The 2025 Tarkir decks are some of the strongest recent precons. Sultai Arisen (Teval, the Balanced Scale) holds the most valuable cards of any 2025 deck, about $122, for about $93. Temur Roar (Eshki, Temur's Roar) is the dragon deck, and it's in the top ten of 84 precons by stock win rate on Playgroup.gg. Both cost more than when they were new. See our 2025 precons ranked for every 2025 deck in detail.

| Wilds of Eldraine | Sep 2023 | 2 | $191 | $149 |
| Commander Masters | Aug 2023 | 4 | $273 | $226 |
| The Lord of the Rings | Jun 2023 | 4 | $94 | $108 |
| March of the Machine | Apr 2023 | 5 | $90 | $95 |
| Phyrexia: All Will Be One | Feb 2023 | 2 | $202 | $144 |
The pattern is clear: decks from 2025 and 2026 sell for $33 to $69 on average, while most 2023 and 2024 decks now cost about twice their $45 to $60 launch prices or more. Prices rise once a deck goes out of print, and the sets in the table with the highest prices (Commander Masters, Phyrexia, Wilds of Eldraine, Thunder Junction) are the ones where the sealed deck costs more than its cards.
Why Old Precons Cost More Than Their Cards
Some out-of-print decks sell for far more than the cards inside:
| Deck | Set | Price | Cards worth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eldrazi Unbound | Commander Masters | ~$412 | ~$301 |
| Sliver Swarm | Commander Masters | ~$340 | ~$207 |
| Corrupting Influence | Phyrexia: All Will Be One | ~$311 | ~$156 |
| Fae Dominion | Wilds of Eldraine | ~$275 | ~$164 |
| Quick Draw | Outlaws of Thunder Junction | ~$189 | ~$131 |
Sealed copies of these decks are bought by collectors, and by players who want a specific commander that was only printed in that deck. If you want to play one of them, buy the singles. It's often half the price.
How to Choose a Precon
- Pick a commander you like. You'll play this deck for months. The commander decides how it plays, so read it first.
- Pick a playstyle. Big creatures, lots of small tokens, spells, graveyards, or stealing the other players' cards. The table's deck names usually give it away.
- Check the colours. Two-colour decks are easier to learn. Four- and five-colour decks like Turtle Power! and Dance of the Elements have more options but need a better mana base to play smoothly.
- Match your group. Most unmodified precons play at about Bracket 2, and some newer ones play like Bracket 3. If your friends play precons, you're fine. If their decks are tuned, plan to upgrade.
- Don't overpay for a new release. Prices in the first weeks are often above MSRP and can fall after a few months. The Marvel decks list at about $75 and now sell for $36 to $61.
Collector's Editions have the same 100 cards with every card in foil (surge foil for Universes Beyond), at two or three times the price. They're worth it only if you want the foils.
What's in a Commander Precon
- 100 cards: the commander and 99 others, including lands. It's ready to play out of the box.
- New cards printed for the deck, from about 10 to 16 per deck in most recent sets, up to 32 in each Star Trek deck and 43 in the TMNT deck.
- Reprints of older cards, which is where most of the value comes from.
- A foil face commander, often with a second foil commander you can swap in, plus tokens and a deck box.
Wizards raised its standard Commander deck price from $44.99 to $49.99 with Lorwyn Eclipsed in January 2026, and dropped the Collector Booster sample pack that used to come in the box. Universes Beyond decks cost more: about $69.99 for Final Fantasy and $74.99 for Marvel and Star Trek.
Upcoming Commander Precons
Star Trek (13 November 2026): four decks at $74.99, each with 32 new cards, plus Collector's Editions. Decklists weren't out yet on 18 October. See our Star Trek release guide for preorder prices.
| Deck | Commander | Colours | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federation Fleet | Jean-Luc Picard | White, blue, red | Spacecraft |
| Landing Party | Spock | Green, white, blue | Landfall |
| Klingon Fury | Worf | Red, white, black | Attacking every opponent |
| We Are the Borg | The Borg Queen | White, blue, black | Artifact creatures |
Marvel: Darkhold Destiny (9 April 2027): four decks led by Hela, Blade, Thor and Doctor Strange, announced at New York Comic Con in October 2026. Decklists and prices aren't out yet.
Both will appear in the table above once they're on sale.
How this table is built
Every week we take each precon's decklist from MTGJSON, which lists the exact printing of every card (including which ones are foil), and price those cards and the sealed deck with TCGplayer market prices through tcgcsv.com, a public mirror of TCGplayer's data. Value is a straight sum of market prices. It doesn't subtract selling fees, and cards under $1 count at their listed price.
Conclusion: Which Precon to Buy
Buy a precon you want to play, at or near its MSRP. In October 2026 that's Multiverse Reforged for the best all-round deck, the Strixhaven decks for value, and a Foundations Commander deck at $29.99 for a first deck. Skip new releases that sell well above MSRP, and skip out-of-print decks priced above their cards unless you're collecting.
The table on this page updates every week, so check the value column before you buy. For every 2025 deck in detail, see our 2025 precons ranked.
